All Things Auto

Driving On The Job

Most people who have jobs use their cars some way or another in connection with their employment. So what kind of auto insurance do you need if you use your car for your work?

It all comes down to what you are carrying. If drive around in your car delivering goods for sale to customers then you need to have a commercial auto insurance policy. This will cost more, so make sure your employer covers it in your pay package.

If, however, you drive around carrying only samples or brochures then you don't need commercial insurance: you need business class insurance. Again, it costs more (but not as much as commercial). Claim the extra on your expenses.

If you don't normally do either of these activities but you occasionally use your car to visit clients or run errands for your company you are probably OK. But check with your auto insurance agent to be sure. Mistakes can be expensive!

Why Must You Have Auto Insurance?

Driving a car around without auto insurance is all too easy. There's nothing to stop you buying a used car with cash and pushing off into the sunset, as long as you avoid cops and speed traps and old ladies crossing the road.

So why bother with all the expense of auto insurance?

Well, it's illegal not to have your car insured. And there are many other reasons, too.

Check out The Top 10 Reasons For Needing Auto Insurance now!

Auto Insurance Pays The Other Guy?

Auto accidents damage your car and that hurts, but what you really need to know is that if YOU are hurt, who will pay YOUR expenses?

If you are in an accident and it was your fault then your automobile insurance should pay your medical expenses and 'loss of service' such as child care, housekeeping and other expenses incurred because you were incapacitated. But, and this is what you need to be alert to, only up to the dollar limit you set.

Make sure that when you set the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) limit on your auto insurance that this will be enough.

You and your family could suffer if you skimp on PIP.

Know Your Auto Insurance

Been in an auto accident lately?

More than 50 percent of policy holders use their auto insurance in any given year. Want to bet against those odds? Then go with the lowest bidder and hope you don't need your auto insurance.

Or, just once, study your policy. Understand what you have and what you don't.

The odds of needing your auto insurance in the next few years may be greater than you think, even if you have never been in an accident.

Do you know what your policy covers, or how good your company is at paying claims? Don't find out by 'accident'!

Auto Insurance - It Pays To Be Informed

Although every driver whines about the cost of auto insurance, the cost of not having enough insurance can be devastating.

Legally, there is a minimum of auto insurance you MUST have. But that minimum can be insufficient when something unexpected happens.

Beware of the incompetent rich jerk with a smart lawyer. You could get into an accident that isn't your fault but because the other driver has an ambulance-chasing attorney you could be the one to pay. Make sure your auto insurance limits are high enough. Cheap auto insurance could turn out to be very expensive.

Auto Insurance - What You Don't Know Can't Pay You!

Most people would rather do their income tax in a room full of screaming monkeys than look into auto insurance.

Yet, that one hated piece of paper might mean the difference between financial ruin and security for your own family.  So maybe reading about auto insurance coverage isn't all that bad.

A room full of screaming monkeys can do a lot of damage, but so can neglecting your auto insurance policy.

Do you have the coverage you think you do? Are your liability limits high enough to protect your family from financial ruin? Isn't worth a little time to be sure?

Why Pay More For Your Auto Insurance?

Every driver knows that you have to have minimum auto insurance coverage to stay legal. It is mandatory to carry insurance so that if you hit another car (or another driver), they can claim from your insurance.

But when you shop around for the absolute cheapest motor insurance, maybe you should just stop and think. How much does your cheap auto policy actually cover?

What if some jerk crashes into you and he hasn't got insurance? What if he damaged your car beyond repair? What if he injured you so you couldn't work? It can happen, anytime. You can't predict it. You can't avoid it. The best you can do, for peace of mind, is to make sure that your auto insurance would cover you if this happens.

The truth is that cheap auto insurance could sometimes turn out to be very expensive.

Was Your Car In A Hurricane?

In a coordinated effort by auto insurance companies, all of the cars towed away from New Orleans, Slidell, and other areas visited by Katrina were dragged into a few central locations to sort out, identify owners, and pay off claims.

But where did they go after that?

Since you're on the web, you must know that there is plenty of fraud out there. The same can be said for the used car lots. One trip to the right website won't cost you a thing, and could save you from your own flood or hurricane disaster souvenir...

Car Seats And Your Auto Insurance

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than two thirds of children killed in car accidents in 1999 were either unrestrained or not properly restrained. Is it the child's fault, or is it child-slaughter?

Why do you think auto insurance companies are so concerned? Auto insurance companies, the government, even school systems, constantly warn and train people.

Apparently, some people still feel it's cruel to strap children down. In the last few days, you have probably seen several children moving about in the car totally unrestrained. Is it because they are unwanted or unloved, or is it just a lack of information?

Insurance and credit have a lot in common.

For one thing, if you have never had it, it is very hard to get. For another, one often depends on the other.

Auto insurance companies now use credit scoring to determine the risk factor of a driver. But the primary factor is still prior insurance.

Your credit may hurt your auto insurance rates, but it is just as likely to improve them. If you manage your financial affairs well, you probably will manage your car just as well. With a few good tips, you will always come out ahead...

Who Pays My Bills If I'm In A Wreck?

The first item listed on every auto insurance policy I have seen is BI/PD. My agent told me that means Bodily Injury/ Property damage - that I am responsible for to the other guy.

So, of all those fancy sounding things on my car insurance policy, what pays MY bills if I am injured?

While the first item on most policies is BI/PD, which covers people you don't even know, or just meet by accident, several coverages in your auto insurance policy directly insure your health. But if you look closely, you will see that, even though the money goes to someone else, if you don't have enough insurance, you will be paying the loss yourself!

Look closely at your insurance or you will fine yourself footing the bills for both of your injuries...

Hybrid Cars

In the US, gas-guzzling car drivers have been hit by rising gasoline prices. $2.00 a gallon is now the minimum you'll have to pay and the thirstier your car, the more it hurts.

What the US is only just waking up to is that the days of cheap gas are gone forever. Gasoline is not an infinite resource: there's just so much of it waiting to be pumped from the earth and once it's gone, it's gone. And the bad news is that the major reserves of what's still left in the ground are not in the USA but in countries that are, well, none too friendly. If the USA has to import oil from Middle Eastern countries that have the monopoly on the remaining oil, they'll just keep upping the price per barrel and soon $2 a gallon will seem like a distant dream.

This is not new news to car drivers in Europe. In countries like UK, governments have traditionally used gasoline (petrol) as a useful source of tax revenue. As oil prices rise, so does the tax and so does the government's revenue. Drivers in UK currently pay the equivalent of $7.50 a gallon, which is why drivers there are more fuel-cost-conscious than their US cousins when it comes to choosing cars.

So where will it end? There will have to be alternative fuels. The race is on to find an answer so that America, and the rest of the world, can keep on driving when the gas runs out.

Enter the 'hybrid car'. Designed to run on part gas, part electric, models are now available to run economically. Even Google is getting in on the act. Google.org is actually 'consulting with hybrid-engine scientists and automakers' to design a new 'an ultra-fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid car engine that runs on ethanol, electricity and gasoline.'  The goal of this Google car is to have a fuel consumption in excess of 100 miles per gallon.

Oh, and it might save the planet, too. But that's another story...
